ABOUT US

The Shilpa Children’s Trust provides a loving home for girls in need. We are located in Narahenpita, Colombo 5, Sri Lanka.

Our charity was first established in 1987 in temporary premises and later moved to a small home in 1994. A generous grant from the European Union, facilitated by the International Children’s Trust UK, enabled us to build more comfortable and spacious quarters and move into our forever home in the year 2000.

The government’s child probation authority places girls from six years of age in our care until they finish schooling. We currently foster twenty-four children under the supervision of the administrative staff, three matrons and general housekeeping staff. The Board of Trustees overlook the entire operation of the Shilpa Home.

Our girls attend the neighborhood school as well as a Sunday school, have access to tutors and counseling as needed and engage in recreational art, cooking and dancing. They enjoy regular sporting exercise and relaxing with a book from the in-house library. Wholesome meals, learning to garden, movie nights and treats from donors are part of the Shilpa lifestyle.

Through the pandemic and ensuing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, our volunteers and donors rallied around us. We were fortunate enough to continue providing the girls with nutritious meals, give access to online schooling and organize extra-curricular activities to substitute school going. While we continue to make ends meet, the home is experiencing several hardships and financial setbacks during these trying times.

We care for our girls with love and empathy, to ultimately provide them with a life that emulates the lives of cherished children living with family.

Our sincere wish is to nurture and educate the Shilpa girls so that they mature into productive members of society. Many of our alumni of 35 years have gone on to pursue their dreams and lead successful and happy lives.
